Domus de janas La Rocca, Sedini

On the edge of the old town centre of Sedini is one of the most important and unique monuments in Sardinia: the domus de janas “La Rocca”, a large limestone block completely excavated in the Late Neolithic era (3500/2700 B.C.), to create a necropolis.

Re-used up until Medieval times as a home, it was later extended and transformed into a temporary prison probably for the Spanish Inquisition in the XVI century. It later became a home, used up until a few years ago. Nowadays, the complex is a series of rooms from various eras (from Neolithic times to the Middle Ages, to the nineteenth century), carved out of solid rock, separated and interconnected with slabs and walls, for a total of 129 m2 spread across three floors.

Inside the Ethnographic Museum “Popular Traditions of Anglona”. In two sections, it hosts an anthropological-ethnographic exhibition of everyday, household items and work tools dating from 1700. The museum-house consists of several interconnecting Medieval rooms with staircases and hatches carved out of the solid rock. There are around 600 items on display, linked to the agricultural and sheep rearing tradition of the community of Sedini and Anglona. There are also exquisite reconstructions of various living areas including the notable bedroom, storeroom and what were probably the Spanish prison cells.

There is a photographic exhibition on the first floor dedicated to Sedini (landscape, archaeological sites, flora and fauna) and its monuments. Lastly, the archaeological part, with the intact domus de janas, all of which can be visited.
