The Funtana Coberta holy well can be found at the bottom of a small valley in the mountainous territory of Gerrei. This is one of the best-preserved examples of a holy well.
The entire building was built with limestone blocks sketchily cut and squared on the stone facing. A small, paved atrium precedes the access, with a stairway of 12 steps with terraced roof. The stairway leads into a room paved with limestone slabs arranged in spokes, where the well pipe opens up in the centre. The room has a false cupola roof about five and a half metres high.
Further rooms and strips of paved flooring were uncovered near the well. The excavation work uncovered numerous bronze pieces from the Nuragic era, while the upper layers show the area was again in use during the Roman republic.
On leaving Ballao, take the country road S.P. 6 towards Escalaplano. After about 3 km, turn left onto the road indicated in the tourist sign. Continue for another few hundred metres. The Funtana Coberta holy well is on the right of the white road
