The Nuraghe Diana sits at the top of a granite mound north of the small Is Mortorius, promontory with a magnificent view over the Golfo degli Angeli.
The complex consists of a three-foil Nuraghe in blocks of grey granite and a village. The three-foil shape, enclosed within a fortress built using gigantic, bulky, heavy blocks was constructed all at the same time. The main tower with tholos roof is connected by a curtain wall to another two smaller towers. In the middle, we find a well-preserved, open-air quadrangular courtyard providing access to various rooms.
During the second world war, defence and logistics systems were built in the area. A small fort, which is still visible today, was even built on top of the Nuraghe’s main tower.
According to legend, the wealthy pirate, Captain Mugahid hid an abundant booty near the Nuraghe Diana, but never managed to return and collect it. This legend led to intense clandestine digging around the Nuraghe. A large number of people tried to find the well where the treasure was supposedly hidden.
The site can be reached from the coastal road, SP 17 connecting Quartu S. Elena with Villasimius. Leave your car when you reach Is Mortorius and continue on foot along the path leading to the top of the mound.
