The Cuccuru Nuraxi site stands on a hill overlooking the surrounding area as far as the Golfo di Cagliari.
The place name comes from the presence of a Nuraghe complex with village, very little of which has survived. A large, completely unique sacred well was built inside the complex towards the end of the Bronze age.
What made it original was mainly its position high above the water table. The cylindrical pipe, lined with rows of stone, crosses almost the entire hillside where the well sits. Going down a depth of 12 metres, it enters a narrow syphon dug directly into the rock, which drops down a further 10 metres.
Another original aspect is that the access stairway does not end directly in the well, but leads into a Tholos hypogeum. The actual well opens out in the floor of the room surrounded by a monolithic circular ferrule.
