Pozzo sacro di Serra Niedda

The archaeological site is located a few kilometres from the town of Sorso, on a vast plain offering a great view of the gulf of Asinara. The site was discovered by chance in 1985 during stone clearing work to plant a vineyard.

The archaeological examinations carried out from 1985 to 1988 helped identify an important cultural compound from the Nuragic era. The data gathered helped establish the idea that the evolution of the sanctuary’s architecture covered a time period from XII to the VIII century B.C., from the Early Final Broze Age to the Iron Age.

The well, which can be found in the south-eastern part of the sanctuary, consists of a circular room and a staircase with 14 steps. The remains of a cylinder shaped altar can be found outside the monument and not far away, another isodomic constructed building.  The compound also includes a circular building and a deep cistern dug into the rock.

Particularly interesting are the organic and inorganic findings recovered during the excavation. These include: numerous bronze statues like the warrior with horned helmet leading, perhaps to be sacrificed, a ram tied with a cord; a convert in the process of praying and the model of a Nuraghe held up by a dove. Lanterns and terracotta busts of Cerere-Demetra date from Roman times and are linked to the propitiatory cults of fertility, the cycles of nature and harvests.
