The archaeological site at San Cromazio is about 1.5 km from the town of Villaspeciosa. It can be reached by heading west and following the road signs.
In the I-II centuries A.D., a post stage (in Latin mansio) along one of the Roman roads which ran through the Campidano, was built. This structure was used for a considerable period of time as a resting place for wayfarers and the animals carrying their goods. In the III century A.D., small thermal baths were added, replenished by a well which completed the services offered to travellers.
With the arrival of Christianity, the place was used for other purposes. Opposite the thermal baths in the IV century A.D., a church was built with a beautiful multi-coloured mosaic floor. The central part of this stone carpet was later redone in the V century A.D.
The church continued to be active at least up until the IX century A.D., as the cemetery to the south of the place of worship proves but was probably abandoned definitively in the XII century A.D. when the Romanesque San Platano church was built.
