The imposing Sa Domu ‘e S’Orcu Tomb of the Giants sits in a slightly elevated position on the “Su Pranu” basaltic plateau, not far from the “Conca Sa Cresia” Nuraghe. This is one of the most important examples of funeral architecture from the Nuragic era and one of the best-preserved monuments from the proto-historic era.
The monument has some unusual construction features: the blocks forming the facade are thinner in the masonry lower down and thicker in the upper part. A narrow, low entrance provided access to a sepulchral chamber which was around 10 m long, 1.25 m wide and approximately 2.5 m high. The internal excavation work uncovered a bed of small pebbles where the funeral goods which accompanied the dead were laid out.
The monument, which had been very well preserved up until the end of the XX century, suffered a significant collapse of the main facade in the period after the Second World War. Subsequent restoration work meant a part of the large facade could be re-built.
It is easily accessible: take the country road SP 44 from Siddi towards Gonnostramatza and turn right when you see the sign for the “Sa domu e s’orcu” Tomb of the Giants. Follow the cement road leading into the giara.
The site is currently unsupervised. Please contact the Cooperativa Villa Silli for guided tours.
