Pozzo Sacro di Predio Canopoli, Perfugas

The holy well is located in the historical centre of Perfugas, close to the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.

The structure of the well was built using finely processed limestone blocks arranged in even rows. It has a classic layout typical of this kind of structure. A paved rectangular atrium precedes the entrance. A staircase with 8 steps with terraced vault leads into the perfectly circular well chamber, truncated in elevation, but unfortunately the roof is missing.  A drainage system is linked to the well and is made up of five limestone slabs with water drainage ducts.

The area around the well is cordoned off by a wall of large trachyte blocks, built on top of the remains of a previous rectangular “in antis” temple. The remains of a Nuragic village can be found near the well.

Various ex voto have emerged from the archaeological excavations which confirm the site’s function as a place of worship. The bronze statue depicting a bull is particularly noteworthy and is currently on display at the Museo Nazionale “G. A. Sanna” in Sassari.
