Piazza Sebastiano Satta, Nuoro

The monument square dedicated to Sebastiano Satta “vate di Barbagia e Sardegna”, was founded in the historical piazza Plebiscito, overlooked by the house where the poet lived; it is located in the central part of the city, between corso Garibaldi and the district of Santu Prédu.

The city council of Nuoro commissioned the artist Costantino Nivola (1911-1988) to renovate the square, and it was completed in 1967. His work didn’t focus on a single monument dedicated to the poet but was a fully-fledged urban project. Indeed, Nivola decided to create a homogeneous and bright seabed with the buildings overlooking the square painted white. The artist decided to pave the unevenly designed space, on the other hand, with granite slabs, cut from eight large blocks of granite in their natural state, from nearby Monte Ortobene. There are small bronze sculptures in the cavities of the granite blocks which depict the poet in different periods and stages of his life.

The space created by Nivola, with a strong contrast between the smooth paving and the uneven blocks, does not hold a privileged point of observation and forces the visitor to enjoy the square and make the most of the different perspectives it offers.
