Parco di Santa Barbara, Villagrande Strisaili (NU)

The Santa Barbara Nature Park lies about three kilometres from the town of Villagrande Strisaili, immersed in the heart of the Ogliastra, in the province of Nuoro.

There are numerous exhilarating scents from aromatic plants found here such as thyme and wild rosemary. There are also medicinal plants, like gentian and digitalis.

The reserve is home to a wide variety of typical Sardinian plants like the cork oak and holm oak, many of them centuries old. The undergrowth consists of Mediterranean shrub essences, mainly myrtle and strawberry tree.

The Park also has an abundance of water, with brooks and different natural springs spread across the area.

Another important feature of the wood is its archaeological importance. Indeed, inside it has seven tombs of giants and a megalithic tomb, the remains of Nuraghi, sacred wells and the relevant villages. Furthermore, the area is also home to the rural church of Santa Barbara, commemorated by the people of Villagrande with a celebration in the park.

The park has an equipped area, on the edge of the forest, where there is a kid’s play area, a small sport’s field, benches and two bar-restaurants.
