Campeda Plateau, Macomer

In the region of Marghine, to the north-west of the town of Macormer, lies the Plateau of Campeda.
The entire area is part of the Sites of Community Importance (SCI) “Altopiano di Campeda” (ITB021101), regulated by the Rete Natura2000.
This plateau reaches heights of 650 m. a.s.l. and is geologically made up of basaltic rocks from the Plio-Pleistocene era.
Its geographical position offers it unique climatic conditions, making it one of the coldest areas on the island, despite it being under 1,000 m a.s.l.

The land features a kind of herbaceous vegetation more than 80% of which are steppes.
One of the most important natural features is the presence of stagnant wells and rivers where White water-crowfoot and other species of aquatic plants grow.
The forest aspect is limited to mixed grazing with the presence of downy oak and holm oak trees.

From a fauna point of view, the SCI is of particular significance as it is a breeding site for the meadow cockerel, a species protected under the Birds Directive (79/409/EEC), and considered at risk of extinction.

The area also features different archaeological sites from the Nuragic period.

The site is easily accessible from the neighbouring towns of Sindia, Macomer and Bortigali
