The archaeological site stands on the Taccu plateau, an evocative, steep-sloped, limestone rock. At almost one thousand metres in height, it overlooks the town of Osini and dominates the Ogliastra and Barbagie.
The landscape has gorges, precipices and cliffs covered in Mediterranean shrub, which emerges florid and lush. It is a place whose natural beauty and historical remains blend perfectly together.
The monumental compound of Serbissi consists of a complex Nuraghe and relative village with huts.
The Nuraghe has a main tower and three secondary towers. Built at different times, the four towers are linked to one another by an imposing wall enclosure and all of them overlook an internal courtyard-corridor.
The main tower (6.30 m high) is the oldest and stands two floors high. The chamber on the ground floor with cupola roof (tholos) is perfectly preserved; the upper chamber can be reached via a staircase and no longer has a roof which unfortunately collapsed.
Thanks to the excavation and restoration work on the site, it is in excellent condition.
The residential area, of which eight circular stone and clay huts have survived, dates to a later period compared to the construction of the Nuraghe.
From the residential centre of Osini, follow the road leading to the gorge known as “Scala di San Giorgio”. After about 2.6 km, you’ll come to a fork with a sign indicating the archaeological site. Turn right and continue for 1.6 km along a paved road following the signs for Serbissi Nuraghe. At the end of the road, you’ll find two dirt tracks; take the one on the right and continue for around 3 km. Go as far as the plateau on foot where the Nuraghe can be accessed along a path on the left.
