Nuraghe Orolo, Bortigali (NU)

One of the best-preserved examples of Nuraghe on several floors.

The central and oldest tower of this monument still preserves the overlapping of the two chambers intact, and both with original tholos roof. Steep steps provide access firstly to the upper floor, onto which opens a large window, and then to the top of the Nuraghe. The protruding bastions were arranged here, and are the only part not to survive.

At a later date, two lower, hefty towers were added to this structure. They give the monument a more solid appearance for those looking at it from the south side, while the opposite is the case to the north, where it gives a more airy, slender impression.

On the trunk road SS 131 towards Sassari, at 149 km, head for Mulargia. Go through the town and continue for another 3 km, passing a paved road on your left, as far as the swerve in the road which leads to the Nuraghe Orolo, marked with a tourist sign. Follow this road for about 1 km as far as the Nuraghe.
