Located in the city centre, the MAN in Nuoro is one of a kind in Sardinia. The museum was opened in 1999, and is housed in a historical building dating from the 1920s, formerly the headquarters of the Provincial Institution.
Following lengthy re-organisation work, the museum opted for a completely original set-up, organising not only exhibition and curatorial activities, but also artistic research. In 2004, it acquired full autonomy, becoming part of the AMACI Association, the Italian Contemporary Art Museum’s Association.
The Museum houses not only temporary exhibitions but also a vast collection of over six hundred works by Sardinian and other artists, dating from the end of the 1900s right up to contemporary artists.
In its current state, the museum has acquired not only the status of regional museum of excellence, but also plans to expand its exhibition spaces thanks to the restoration of two adjacent buildings, in order to dedicate the current office exclusively to the permanent collection.
The artists who are part of the permanent collection include Edina Altara, Stanis Dessy, Giuseppe Biasi, Foiso Fois, Wanda Nazzari and Costantino Nivola.
