The Island of Caprera is the second largest island in the Archipelago of La Maddalena, in northern Sardinia, in the sea of the historical region of Gallura.
The island covers an area of around 15.7 square kilometres and its highest peak is Monte Teialone (212 m a.s.l.)
The island consists mainly of granite rocks, covered with woods, mostly pine groves and bushes of coastal Shrub.
There are a large number of coves and small beaches, many of them incredibly beautiful and of naturalistic importance.
Over and above this nature aspect, Caprera is well known from a historical point of view for having been the home of General Giuseppe Garibaldi. Garibaldi lived on the island for 26 years until his death on 2/06/1882. Nowadays, his home “casa bianca” is a museum dedicated to his life and goes by the name of Compendio Garibaldino.
Caprera is linked to La Maddalena by a 600-metre-long bridge, built in 1958 to replace the older dam bridge from 1890.
The Island of Caprera is part of the Maddalena Archipelago National Park and falls within the European network of areas of environmental excellence. All boating, fishing, scuba diving activities etc. are permitted but need to be authorised.
