The Girgini Forest is situated in the area of Desulo, in the province of Nuoro.
The forest extends across the Gennargentu massif, more precisely on the western slopes of Bruncu Spina (1823 m a.s.l.), downstream of Punta Paolinu (1792 m a.s.l.) and Genna Florisa (1822 m a.s.l.) and the north-western slopes of Bruncu Furau (1512 m a.s.l.), in the valley defined by the Rio Su Fruscu.
It covers an area of 1,472 hectares, with a typically Mediterranean climate of mildly cold, rainy winters and hot, dry summers.
The area’s morphology featureselevations with steep slopes and some of Sardinia’s highest altitudes.
From a geological point of view, the formation of the grey phyllites of Gennargentu prevails, together with the schists and, on the highest peaks, rows of quartz and small ridges of red porphyry (P.ta Paolinu, B.cu Spina and su Sciusciu). There is also an area known as “tacchi di Girgini” (Su Toni de Girgini and Genna Eragas), made up of grey limestone rocks. These are the remains of the limestone covering from the Jurassic period.
There is a forest nursery inside the forest and eight equipped areas for recreational use. The forest is also crossed by a dense network of paths of natural interest.
The area is part of the Site of Community Importance (SCI) “Monti del Gennargentu” (ITB021103) regulated by the Rete Natura 2000.
