The collection of works located in the areas of the Palazzo del Consiglio regionale was created in 1987 by the artist from Orani, Costantino Nivola (1911-1988). The decorative complex includes seven sculptures and a work of graffiti.
In 1985, the artist was officially appointed to decorate the new Palazzo del Consiglio built at the same time from a project by the architect Mario Fiorentino. Focusing on a single decorative project, Nivola encouraged the creation of an external granite paving; with this “salt lake” the artist managed to integrate his works arranged outside the palace as best as possible, with a view to streamlining the heavy architecture.
The marble and travertine sculptures are two recurring themes in the artist’s poetic expression: the Builder and Mother, male and female models idealised as qualities of strength and fertility. The graffiti work on the other hand features markings engraved directly onto the smooth granite slabs adorning the outside walls of the palace. The graffiti work, split into four mirrors, presents drawings of cows and horses, grazing or running, in the typical style of the artist Salvatore Fancello (1916-1941), inseparable friend to Nivola who decided to reproduce the drawing here.
