Piscinnì lies along the coastal area of the Domus de Maria municipality, in the province of Sud Sardegna.
Piscinnì is a small bay where we can find a beach stretching for around 200 metres. The pond lies in the backshore and occasionally, in the winter, breaks its outlet in the central part of the sandy shore.
The coast has a fine, clear sand, alternating with rocks emerging from the sandy shore and metamorphic rocks. The seabed is low with a gentle slope.
The beach is surrounded by a low dune belt covered in vegetation. As well as juniper, phillyrea and Mastic tree also grow in the dunes. In the pond area, which tends to dry up in the summer season, we can find various typical species of the brackish environment.
Extending your gaze south-west, you will see the promontory where the Piscinnì tower stands, which can be accessed along a path, and which was built between the XVI and XVII centuries by the Spanish.
The rocky coastline is also full of ancient quarries for the production of blocks of sandstone, used in construction, dating to the Phoenician-Punic era and Roman times (up to around 2,500 years ago).
The entire area was recently the subject (2009-2014) of the PROVIDUNE project, financed by the European Union with the LIFE Nature & Biodiversity fund. The purpose of the project was to protect dune environments in certain Italian Sites of Community Importance (SCI), in particular, the protection of the “2250* priority habitat: Coastal dune with Juniperus spp.”
The area is part of the Site of Community Importance (SCI) “Stagno di Piscinnì” (ITB042218), regulated by the Rete Natura 2000.
