The Sardinian Donkey “Mui Muscas” Park lies in the municipality of Ortueri, in the historical region of Mandrolisai, in the province of Nuoro.
This natural oasis which extends for about 55 hectares was established in 1994 on an initiative sponsored by the local administration. The Sardinian donkey “Equus africanus asinus” is at risk of extinction and this led to the decision to create a nature site which could provide them with refuge and save them.
Indeed, with the arrival of the first farming machinery, in the 1960s, the use of the donkeys in rural environments, declined. Precisely for this reason, their numbers dropped, and they almost fell into extinction.
There are currently around 1,000 Sardinian donkeys registered on the island. The Park is home to about 50 of them.
The park is a genuine protected natural environment, immersed in holm oak and cork oak woods. As well as the donkeys, you’ll also be able to spot boars, hares, wild rabbits and foxes.
There is a reception building in the park and an equipped park, which is licensed out by the Municipality of Ortueri following a specific request.
