The Taccu Oasis of Fauna Protection is an area in Ulassai, in the historical region of Ogliastra, in the province of Nuoro.
The area in question covers 1,265 hectares and extends mostly over the Tacco di Ulassai. Its maximum height is 987 m a.s.l. (Punta Seccu).
The geology of the area features Dolomite rock which is subject to the action of karstic-like chemical processes caused by the flow of water. These processes give rise to the formation of caves and underground cavities, sinkholes and other morphologies linked to karst.
The forest of holm oak dominates the area from a flora point of with the presence of some huge century-old trees. The tall shrub consists mainly of strawberry trees, phillyrea, heather and Mastic tree. In the areas of low shrub and garigue sees the appearance of rockrose, helichrysum and rosemary. There are also different wild orchids, some of which are among the rarest in the country.
As far as the fauna is concerned, we can find amphibians in the wetland like the Sardinian brook salamander and the Speleomantes. The small mammals include the wild cat and the garden dormouse while larger animals include the Sardinian deer and boar. The birds include the Sardinian partridge, the hoopoes and the great spotted woodpecker.
Inside the oasis you will find equipped areas with tables and water points for full enjoyment of the forest.
