The rio Baccu Silacaccero is a river with different features in the stretch furthest upstream and in the one furthest downstream. It flows over very white granite rocks smoothed by water at a height of around 1,000 m a.s.l., in the area between Villagrande Strisaili and Talana.
In Bau Mela, a primary forest of oak trees, century-old juniper trees and Mediterranean shrub is home to the natural pools of Bau Mela. This area is marked by the presence of two waterfalls, basins, cauldrons and crystal-clear wells, dug out of the granite.
The first and most imposing waterfall creates a larger pool, while the second one is split into smaller pools, equally easy to reach.
In the surrounding area, a delightful path, complete with tables where you can stop off, leads to the magnificent Sothai waterfall, in the Bau Vigo canyon.
The importance of this water supply comes from the presence of a dam and a hydro-electric plant. This stopbank allows for a reservoir volume of 100 thousand cubic metres and subtends a basin of 92 square kilometres, which are part of the control system of the Alto del Flumendosa Lake plant, together with the other dams, Bau Mandara and Bau Muggeris.
This area is also rich in archaeological findings like s’Arcu e is Forros, where you can admire a megaron temple and two wells, the Genna Troculu complex with Nuragic village and tomb of the Giants and the archaeological site of Sa Carcaredda.
