The Mediterranean Mask Museum can be found in Mamoiada, a place famous for its evocative Carnival tradition.
The museum has three exhibition rooms and offers an interactive and compelling experience.
The first room, with images accompanied by text, music and sounds, introduces the visitor to the traditions of Mamoiada and its Carnival. Different theories are also put forward about the origins and meanings of the Mamuthones and Issohadores masks.
The second room is dedicated to the Carnival in Barbagia. Some of the most important masks in the centre of Sardinia are displayed here, like the Boes e i Merdùles from Ottana and the Thurpos from Orani.
Lastly, the Sala del Mediterraneo, with a comparative exhibition, analyses the carnival culture in the Alpine chain, the Spanish peninsular and the Balkan peninsula. The exhibition aims to present a close-knit network of common splendours and inspirations in the Mediterranean area, shared by areas which are geographically and culturally distant.
