Su Monte is the elevation overlooking the high lake of the River Temo which houses the town of Monteleone Roccadoria, in the province of Sassari.
The lake was created as a result of the artificial barricade of Monte Airadu (225 m. a.s.l.). As in numerous other cases in Sardinia, the landscape was transformed by giving a new and characteristic panorama to the inhabited area.
Su Monte (421 m. a.s.l.) has interesting geological formations with its layers consisting of volcanic rock and its flat peak with emerging sedimentary rocks.
This structure with sheer-drop rocks, made the peak difficult to access from almost every angle. This ensured that the mountain was a genuine natural fortress, a popular place for human settlements as far back as the earliest ancient times, and further aided by the presence of natural springs.
Historically, this area was known as Nurcara and different researchers believe that the name of the mountain was originally ”Su Monte de Nurcar”.
The elevation can be visited along the panoramic road where specific signs indicate the belvedere spots easily accessible from the small village.
