There are numerous granite ledges in Gallura known as Inselberg (from the German isolated mountain); they form thanks to the selective decay of rocky complexes, often on granite, due to chemical-physical or erosive processes.
Monte Pulchiana is the largest granite inselberg in Sardinia. It measures: 110 m high overall and around 120 m wide at the base. The “monolith” stands 673 m a.s.l., and dominates the plane of Aggius and Padulo. You can spot a number of tafone rocks at the foot of the monolith and the surrounding area, including some well-known ones like the “conchi fraicati”, walled caves. The most important of these can be seen not far from the road near the access point to the site. There are also some Nuragic archaeological sites in the surrounding area. Since 1994, the site has been recognised a regional natural monument.
Take the trunk road SS133 for Palau to reach the site, and then the nearby Scupetu road. Another access route is along the country road SP5 for Aglientu.
