Monte Ortobene can be found in the city of Nuoro, in the province of the same name.

Its peak, also known as Cùccuru Nighèddu, reaches 955 m a.s.l., while not far below, at a height of 925 m a.s.l. we find the Statue of the Redeemer. The statue, erected in 1901, was the work of the sculptor, Vincenzo Jerace and is the symbol of Monte Ortobene.

The mountain area extends for around 1,600 hectares. From a geological point of view, the mountain is granite rock and is part of the granitoid complex of Nuoro.
The vegetation mainly features the presence of holm oak together with downy oak, cork, pine, juniper, rockrose, wild olive, phillyrea, mastic trees, broom, holly, strawberry trees, lavender, cyclamen and wild orchids.

Monte Ortobene is also the natural habitat of different mammals such as boar, weasels, hares, martens and foxes. Birds of prey can be observed in the sky like the golden eagle, the goshawk, the peregrine falcon, the buzzard and the sparrowhawk. Other birds include partridges, turtledoves, spotted woodpeckers, jays and sparrows.

The mountain is full of marked paths and trails and this makes it a popular destination with trekking enthusiasts. Its peaks are fully-fledged belvederes from where you can look over the valley, towards the Mountains of Oliena and on clear days, towards the sea of Baronia.
