Monte Cuccuruddu, Cheremule

Monte Cuccuruddu is an ancient, extinct volcano in the municipality of Cheremule, in the province of Sassari, and part of the historical region of Logudoro.

The volcanic cone (680 m a.s.l.), easily reached from the town, offers a delightful landscape, crossed by paths and belvederes, and covered by a luxuriant pine forest.

This natural site is home to an old quarry where Cheremule was extracted.
This rock, typically found in the area, takes its name from the town and is a lava stone with pumice structure. The stone’s insulation properties were well known, and it was used in ancient times as a building material.

The quarry is currently inactive so you can enjoy Monte Cuccuruddu as a natural attraction, a walking destination in its pine forest, crossing the equipped pathway which leads right to the top. A belvedere offers a panoramic view across the Meilogu region dotted with extinct volcanic craters.

The site is part of the assets protected by the Regional Landscape Plan (PPR) of the Autonomous Regional Council of Sardinia according to the “Code of cultural heritage and landscape”.
