The Natural Monument of “Su Corongiu de Fanari” can be found in Guttur Forru, in the municipality of Masullas, in the province of Oristano.
This monument consists of the outcrop of an andesitic “mega pillow“, a flow of lava linked to underwater eruptions from the Miocene era (around 20 million years ago). The term “pillow” is used to identify the “pillow-like” shapes which this lava takes on after rapid cooling.
In particular, Su Corongiu de Fanari has assumed an unusual rosette shape due to erosion. It is about 12 metres wide, with an overall height of around 11.5 metres. Due to its size and state of preservation, the case of Masullas can be regarded as fundamentally unique in the world.
This is why the outcrop is classified as a geosite. This term identifies an element of scientific and environmental value of the landscape heritage, as well as an environmentally sustainable and compatible resource for tourist use and promotion.
Su Corongiu de Fanari is, therefore, a geological-geomorphological asset of rare natural value easily accessed along the country road SP44 between Masullas and Gonnostrasmatza.
