Punta delle Colonne is one of the southernmost tips on Isola di San Pietro, in Carloforte.
From the cliff, you can enjoy a view of the splendid pair of sea stacks, known as the “Colonne”.
They are two long rocks made of Riolite ignimbrite, a smooth grey rock, of Oligo-Miocene origin. The geological structure of the layers and cracking known as rock “columnar” led to a selective erosion by waves. This led to these two columns being isolated from the rest of the crag, creating a unique and delightful appearance. The columns reach a height of around 16 m a.s.l., lower than the original crag (22-30 m a.s.l.)
The columns are a protected and recognised Natural Monument and, like the rest of the island, are part of the Sites of Community Importance (SCI) “Isola di San Pietro” (ITB040027).
