Lake Gusana lies at the heart of Barbagia, in the municipality of Gavoi
Like most of the lakes in Sardinia, this is an artificial basin, covering an area of around 2.4 km2. The lake originates from the stopbank on the Rio Gusana/River Taloro, into which flow several other rivers in the area.
The dam was built between 1959 and 1961, in the area between Mounts Littoleri and Nodu and Sos Arcos, at the foot of the Fonni plateau.
The area is immersed in delightful surroundings, featuring elevations covered in downy oak and Mediterranean shrub.
The lake covers a Roman bridge built over the Rio Gusana around the II-III century A.D. It was a four-arch bridge, whose presence highlighted the strategic importance the ancient Romans attributed to this place.
Lake Gusana is one of the most important tourist attractions in Barbagia. Indeed, you can try your hand at water sports like canoeing, enjoy recreational fishing and visit the forests around the lake on foot, or on horseback.
