Foresta pietrificata di Carrucana

The petrified forest of “Carrucana” is part of the Paleobotanic Park of Anglona which covers not only the municipality of Martis, but also Bulzi, Laerru and Perfugas. Work was carried out in the area to safeguard and enhance a region whose landscape is of significant importance.

The trees in this place, characterised by silence and charm, have transformed into stones lying down gently on the ground. These are the remains of fossil plants from the Early Miocene period. This means that twenty million years ago – this is how old these magnificent stone trees are – a very violent volcanic eruption caused the forests to sink into nearby lakes which, rich in silicon, created the ideal substratum for the fossilisation process.
