The Modighina Forest lies mainly in the municipality of Asuni and Samugheo, in the province of Oristano, on the central-western side of Sardinia.
The area extends across geologically hilly terrain with mainly schistose metamorphic rocks and covers a surface of 885 hectares, also touching on the regions of Genoni and Laconi.
The forest surface mainly has Mediterranean shrub with wild olive and, to a lesser extent, some patches of cork forest and holm oak forest.
From areas higher up, it is possible to observe the valley of the rio Araxisi, winding between sheer-drop walls and rocks which form actual natural monuments.
Opposite the fire-prevention lookout point of Modighina (Monte Perdedu, 858 m a.s.l.), we can see the remains of the Medusa Castle, in Samugheo.
The area is full of hiking paths and is popular with lovers of trekking and walks.
