The Uatzo Forest lies in the municipality of Tonara, in the historical region of Barbagia, in the province of Nuoro.
This is a forestry compound extending across approximately 782 hectares, with the lowest altitude at 486 m a.s.l., the rio Is Putzos up to the highest altitude 1,495 m a.s.l. of the Conca Giuanne Fais.
The forest extends across porphyritic rocks with schistose soils and underlayers and consists mainly of holm oak trees grouped with chestnut and downy oak, as well as the various shrub essences.
Different animal species live there including the boar. The birds of prey include the golden eagle, Bonelli’s eagle and the peregrine falcon.
There are numerous equipped areas for stop-offs in the forest, as well as springs and paths. There are a number of walks marked with sign posts.
The Uatzo forest is crossed by the old railway line where the “green train” travels along. Indeed, from numerous panoramic points you can see the railway track with its small stations and various bridges.
There is a services area in the forest run by the Forestas organisation, where you can get information about the area and its walks.
The forest is easily reached after about 15 minutes along a rough track road which leads off from the trunk road, SS 295.
