The Sa Spindula Waterfall is located in the municipal area of Uta, in the province of South Sardinia.
The waterfall is also in the Gutturu Mannu Regional Nature Reserve, not far from the Monte Arcosu WWF Oasis, protected habitat for Sardinian Deer.
The water cascade, standing around 20 metres high, forms along the course of the Rio de Sa Spindula, between the peaks of Punta Nicola Tingiosu (616 m a.s.l.) and Punta S’Ala Manna (670 m a.s.l.). This is a seasonally conditioned flow of water, which develops among the rocks and vegetation in the forest.
The Rio de Sa Spindula, during its winding course, flows over different kinds of rocks. Indeed, before reaching the point of the waterfall, the water flows across ancient sandstone continuing over pink granite. The water cascade forms precisely on the granite then drops down into a well, in a kind of natural amphitheatre. From here the water continues towards the valley, surrounded by oleander plants and Mediterranean shrub, forming other cascades and rapids.
The place name “Sa Spindula” in local dialect means simply “The Waterfall” and the river Rio de Sa Spindula means “Waterfall Stream“.
The site can be reached by car then you continue along the path marked as Route 211. From Cagliari follow the S.S.130 as far as the exit for the CASIC Industrial Site. From here you come to the S.P. 2 and after about 9 km (directions for the Monte Arcosu hotel), continue on the left, along a road which is initially asphalted then becomes a dirt track, along the rio valley. You will come to a parking area where you can leave your car and continue along Route 211.
