The cascata di Piscina Irgas can be found in the municipality of Villacidro, almost on the border with the district of Domusnovas.
The water from the waterfall drops 45 metres, coming down from Mount Punta Piscina Irgas (691 m. a.s.l.). The waterfall originates from the evocative Rio d’Oridda river which crosses the plateau of the same name, in the Monte Linas massif.
The water from the waterfall then continues along the valley carved out of the granite rocks until it joins the Rio Leni. Here it forms a series of natural water basins spanning almost the entire length of the rio d’Oridda.
The granite rock mountains surrounding the waterfall are those typically found in this part of Sardinia. The dominating vegetation is Mediterranean shrub consisting mainly of holm oak, strawberry tree, heather, juniper, rockrose, cork oak and oleander in the wetlands.
From a fauna point of view, you can spot deer, boar and mouflon in the mountain areas.
The best place to observe the waterfall is undoubtedly near Punta Piscina Irgas. This point can be reached from Cantina Ferraris in the area of the Foresta di Monti Mannu, along a mule track.
The area is full of paths signposted by the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) and by hiking trail signs for the Cammino di Santa Barbara.
The area is part of the Sites of Community Importance (SCI) “Monte Linas – Marganai” (ITB041111) regulated by the Rete Natura 2000.
