The Bassa Trinita beach, also known as Cala Maiore, sits on the north-western coast of the Isola di La Maddalena, in the archipelago of the same name, to the north of Sardinia, in the area of the Strait of Bonifacio.
The beach extends for about200 metres, exposed to the Mistral and Ponente winds, with an extensive dune system behind it.
The shoreline has a fine-grain, grey sand, interspersed with reefs of beige and pink granite rock. The seabeds are shallow and mainly sandy.
The extensive dune system rising up behind the beach is colonised by pioneer herbaceous and bush plant species, such as juniper.
Opposite are the two small islands of Colombi and dei Porri.
The name of the beach derives from “abbass’a Trinita” or rather “under the Trinity” referring to the small, rural, eighteenth-century church nearby.
The beach is part of the la Maddalena Archipelago National Park and is environmentally protected.
