The place known as Baia delle “Rocce Rosse” is located to the east of the port of Arbatax, a tourist hamlet in the municipality of Tortolì, in Ogliastra.
The name of this place comes from the presence of tall red granite rocks. The red boulders rest on the backdrop of the white rocks, giving the coast a unique and charming appearance.
The granite porphyry of the rocks was re-modelled by atmospheric agents down through the centuries. This process gave the cliffs a characteristic aspect, which brings to mind the imposing shape of the peaks of a Gothic cathedral. A natural monument which seems to stand out against the blue of the sky. Their reflection gives the water a colour ranging from emerald green to crystal blue.
Furthermore, this charming bay, acted as a stage for the final scene in the film “Travolti da un insolito destino nell’azzurro mare d’agosto” by Lina Wertmüller (1974).
Every summer, the fishing village of Arbatax becomes an arena for charming and very traditional cultural events. One of the most famous is the “Rocce Rosse Blues” Festival, showcase for internationally renowned musicians, whose name refers precisely to the evocative location.
