Foresta di Monte Pisanu, Bono and Bottita (SS)

The State-owned Forest of Monte Pisanu lies between the areas of Bottida and Bono, in the province of Sassari.

The area has been state-owned since 1886 and covers an area of 2,210.4 hectares.

The forest is part of the historical region of Goceano, an area full of forests and areas of natural importance.
More specifically, Monte Pisanu has centuries-old English yew, rare flora endemisms, woods of downy oak and mixed forest formations of holm oak and cork oak.
It is precisely the downy oak which dominates the landscape, reaching the highest points in excess of 1,000 m a.s.l.

The forest is populated with different animal species including different reptiles and amphibians. The mammal species include boar, foxes, weasels, hares, garden dormice and porcupines. Bird species include specimens of goshawk, sparrowhawk, buzzard, kestrel, peregrine falcon and common raven.

Sos Nibberos, an area populated by thousand-year old English yew, was declared a natural monument (Regional Decree no. 24 of 29 January 1994 by the Regional Department for the Environmental Protection of the Sardinian Region).

The forestry house is home to the Service Centre providing support on environmental education and a visit to the forest, and where it is possible to find all the relative information regarding the area.

The forest is part of the Site of Community Importance (SCI) “Catena del Marghine and del Goceano” (ITB011102) regulated by the Rete Natura 2000.
