Parco Naturalistico Archeologico Sa Fogaia, Siddi

The Sa Fogaia Park is a nature and archaeology site in Sa Fogaia, on the eastern slope of the basaltic Pranu de Siddi plateau. Human presence in the area dates back to prehistoric times. This is clear from the presence of the Nuraghe Sa Fogaia and the remains of Nuragic, Punic and Roman settlements in the Park.

Areas of the Park are dominated by the holm oak forest, herbaceous settlings and others by Mediterranean shrub. To date, 154 different plant species have been identified. Different animal species live in the Park. 63 species of birds, 7 mammals, 7 reptiles and 5 insects have been identified. From a panoramic spot, you can admire the characteristic landscape of Marmilla, with its harmonious continuation of hills and flat areas. You’ll get a view as far as the Giare di Gesturi and Serri, the Monte Arci, the Arcuentu and the most imposing peaks of the Gennargentu.

A nature trail known as “su mori de is erbas” (the grass path) winds through the Park. Most of the flora species which are part of the plant community of the Marmilla and southern Sardinia can be observed here. Some old stone-built shepherds’ enclosures, various terraces built by farmers and an imposing balsatic rock crag from 2.5 million years ago, can be reached. Taking a closer look at it, you get a better understanding of the geological origins of the Giara di Siddi, as well as the hillside environment of the Marmilla.

Nature and archaeological tours are available in the park as are educational workshops, shows and cultural events. In addition, a visit to the Park complements the one to Sardinia’s Museo Ornitologico (Ornithological Museum) with a chance to observe various species found in the museum collection, in their natural habitat. There is a picnic area in the midst of its centuries-old holm oaks, complete with tables, cooking areas, toilets and water points.
