The area of Nuxis is full of natural caverns and mines, linked to human presence as far back as ancient times.
In the area of Sa Marchesa in particular, in the hamlet of Acquacadda, the unique Sa Marchesa Geological Speleological Archaeological Site was created. This site includes a museum area, a naturalistic geological-mining park and a cave, which can be easily visited with an advanced booking.
The cave in question is called Su Montixeddu and can be found at a height of 215 metres. The cavern extends for a total of around 200 metres with a planimetric mapping of 170 metres, reaching a depth of 27 metres.
The cavern develops mainly in the Paleozoic limestone rocks from the Middle Cambrian period, typical of the Sulcis.
The interest and traditions linked to this cavern are extremely old. Indeed, fragments of prehistoric ceramics were found inside the cave. Furthermore, ruins of Nuraghe were also found in the area.
Another important cavern in the area is the “Su Fossu de sa Cava de su Tipu” cave, to the south of the town of Nuxis.
The architecture of the cavern is unique and was uncovered during work to create a limestone quarry. Furthermore, settlements from the Nuragic era and the holy well of Tattinu were discovered near the cave.
Research on the cave only began recently as it was previously used as a dump. For a long time, this bad practice impeded access to the cave, especially due to its internal emissions.
From a flora point of view in the area, there are species of Mediterranean shrub worth pointing out (wild olive, Mastic tree, rockrose etc.). At the foot of the Su Montixeddu hill, we find olive groves and vineyards. As for the fauna, it is worth pointing out the presence of wild rabbits.
