la casa delle inquietudini Ulassai

Wandering through the streets of Ulassai, you will come across a series of contemporary art and land art works. These make up the itinerary of the open-air museum created by Maria Lai from Ulassai.

The earliest works date from 1982, followed a year later by the implementation of the coral performance Legarsi alla montagna. Following on from the success of the performance, the town of Ulassai decided to renovate the town’s old wash house. Maria Lai installed a frame-attic, recalling the topic of the brickwork, a conventionally female work, just like the wash-house.

During the 1990s, Maria Lai created a number of artistic works, always measuring them against the island’s traditions and as part of the redevelopment of the places. One example of this is Le Capre Cucite from 1992, created on a bare part of reinforced concrete; in 1993 she produced La Scarpata, with which the artist eliminated a small dump that was literally disfiguring the mountain.

Ten years later, Maria Lai returned to her work in the town of Ulassai, creating pieces mainly linked to how children play and their fears. This topic is visible in the works like La casa delle Inquietudini from 2005 and Il Volo del Gioco Dell’oca from 2003. Maria Lai directly involves the town’s children in each of these works.

The works are not only created by them but also directed at them.

Other works found along the museum route include La Strada del Rito, I Libretti Murati, L’Arte ci Prende Pper Mano, La Lavagna, Il Muro del Groviglio and Il Pastorello Mattiniero con Capretta.
