Su Mulinu Vezzu (the old mill) stands in the northern suburb of Olzai, on the rio Bisine, surrounded by thick vegetation. The mill is an interesting example of pre-industrial architecture.
The water mill was built between the 1700s and the 1800s by the Cardia-Mesina family, landowners and wheat growers.
The mechanism made the most of the hydraulic force of the rio Bisine, which powered the large wheel visible on the outside. Inside the granite building, a series of wooden mechanisms would transfer the propulsive force to a large stone grindstone which would grind the wheat.
In 2002, the mill was bought over by the local council which, after careful restoration, handed it back to the local people. Currently, pre-booked visits only.
