The small rural church of Santa Maria was built around the XII century A.D. on the remains of a previous Roman settlement. The current building’s plain shapes, redone after the XVI century A.D., blend in with the surroundings which preserves a part of the forest, originally covering the entire area. A pretty Roman spring with a basin of three niches and an outlet channel can be seen nearby. Nowadays, the spring is closed off by a modern construction to protect it. Follow the road towards the church, in the forest, and you’ll see the remains of Roman thermal baths and other structures which are both Roman and Medieval. The forest, as well as the church, is considered devoted to the Madonna.
