San Basilio thermal baths and Romanesque church

Cronologia: Età romana, età medievale

Terme romane e chiesa di San Basilio, San Basilio

The archaeological site can be found in the small town, in the suburbs to the north. The entrance from above offers a full view of the multi-layered site, consisting of Roman thermal baths, a Romanesque church, and other structures, most likely from Medieval times.

The Romanesque thermal baths from the Imperial age are remarkably well preserved. One of the rooms still has its original roof with barrel vaults. The system of tanks, cisterns and water ducts provides a complete idea of the structure of the place for thermal baths. The Northern defence wall also incorporated the Roman ones, including the opening of the furnace which heated the water and rooms. This is why it is worthwhile moving outside of the enclosure.

The Romanesque church, perhaps dating from the XII century, sits on top of previous ruins in a dominating position compared to the other structures. It is currently a very simple single nave, but the presence of large infill arches on the southern side and other ruins gives us a clear idea of its original layout with two naves. The imposing double bell gable is also worth pointing out, with its slightly clumsy appearance, possibly due to partial restoration work.

Other structures, now difficult to make out in the ground, could bridge the time gap between the two main monuments.
