The San Giovanni Tower stands in the town of the same name, in the hamlet of Posada.
Built using sandstone, limestone and pink granite, it blends perfectly with the surrounding environment. It has a cylindrical shape with truncated base and is 11.5 metres high. It is spread across two levels, the entrance is mid-height (4 m) and leads into a room with cupola. From here, a hatch leads to a terrace, where the embrasures are still visible in the parapet. Two or three lightly armed men could fit inside whose job it was to raise the alarm with the nearby tower of Santa Lucia and the town’s inhabitants in the event of danger. Up until 1986, there was a machicolation visible on the terrace from where it was possible to pour boiling oil and tar on the enemy. There was a church near the tower known as Ecclesia Sancti Johannis de Portunono, probably a place name linked to the nearby port of Caletta.
The tower can be admired along the coast of La Caletta di Siniscola, by following the seafront. After crossing over the tourist port and entering the area of Posada, you will catch a glimpse of the tower. It can’t be visited on the inside.
