Castello di Burgos, Burgos (SS)

The Goceano Castle stands on a granite peak at the foot of which we find the town of Burgos.

In the XII century, possibly in 1134, the Giudice di Torres (Judicate of Logudoro) Gonario I de Lacon-Gunale had the castle built in order to patrol the borders of his giudicato.

The castle was subject to different political episodes passing first under the power of the Genoese, the Doria family, in the XIV century the giudici d’Arborea and lastly under the rule of the Aragonese.

The fortified structure extends across an uneven perimeter. The large, square-planned great tower spread across two floors of over 15 metres, stands above the internal courtyard.

Access to an underground room which was probably a water cistern can be found in the internal courtyard. There are a series of other rooms north of the great tower used by the troops and the castle’s staff.

The city walls built with a mix of stone and brick surround the perimeter of the entire site.

The Museum of Sardinia’s Castles, is housed in a nineteenth century residence in the town centre with maps of the coastal towers dating from the Spanish era, old photographs of the castles and fortified sites and a multimedia room that provides an in-depth look at the Sardinian castles.
