Laveria Lamarmora, Nebida - Iglesias

Foto di Maurizio Zucca

The Laveria Lamarmora can be found in Nebida, a mining site used as far back as ancient times to extract lead and silver.

The structure was most likely built in 1897, as a place for washing the extracted mineral, and remained in operation until the early 1930s.

Built on the cliff overlooking the sea, precisely because of its architectural and picturesque context, it is regarded as one of the most interesting buildings in the whole Iglesiente mining area.

There is a walk that leads from the town of Nebida as far as the belvedere from where it is possible to admire the complex, the coastline and the S’AgusteriIl Morto and Pan di Zucchero islands. A very long stairway with 400 steps leads from the belvedere, currently closed to the public, to the Laveria Lamarmora, the site managed by Igea SpA

The building was constructed with exposed stone which extends over some superimposed volumes and is covered with large arches, rounded off with high chimneys. At the foot of the laveria, by the sea, the baking kilns, the mineral and goods warehouse and the old bilancelle-ship jetty are clearly visible.

The Complex is considered symbolic of the surrounding mining area and, in the mining context, was one of the most modern plants of the XX century.
