The Capo Sant’Elia Lighthouse in the Baia di Calamosca is one of Cagliari’s most iconic symbols. This is one of the most incredible panoramic positions in the area, as it is also in a nature reserve famous for its biodiversity.
The Lighthouse structure is classic style with truncated tower painted with white and black bands. A little further down is the Signal Station at Capo Sant’Elia, which is an ancient Aragonese lookout tower, dating back to 1638.
Construction work on the Lighthouse began in 1850, but only became operational in 1860, and was then electrified in 1937.
Located at the entrance to the Golfo di Cagliari, the Lighthouse is not only one of the main points of reference for boats and ships entering the port, but also an important point of reference for air traffic, as the Lighthouse is part of the FOA (aviation obstruction lights) system.
