Chiesa di San Saturnino, Bultei (SS)

The church of San Saturnino di Usolvisi stands isolated on a hillock not far from where the river Tirso flows, on the ruins of a Nuraghe.

The area uncovered a number of archaeological finds dating to the pre-Nuragic period. Its proximity to the river Tirso is probably what attracted man to it along with the significant number of thermal water springs. As early as Roman times, the Aquae Lesitanae thermal baths was established here and still to this day, opposite the church of San Saturnino, stands the spa of the same name.

The church was built in the second half of the XII century. The building, in Romanesque style, was built with blocks of local red trachyte, and is a single hall with bell gable. It has a very linear facade, and the main portal opens up in the centre with architrave on top of which is a raised pointed arch. The same happens for the portal open at the side. There are two windows in the sides and one in the apse.

Leave the trunk road SS 131 at Macomer to reach the church and follow the SS 129 for about 15 km. Turn left here and take the SS 128 bis as far as the town of Bultei. After leaving the town, follow the SS 128 bis and turn right onto the country road SP 86. Continue on for around 6.8 km and turn left. You’ll find the church standing on an isolated hillock.
