Chiesa di San Giacomo, Cagliari

The church overlooks the piazza of the same name in the Villanova neighbourhood; the piazza is also overlooked by the Holy Cross and Purging Souls Oratory. The earliest mention of the building, built in Gothic-Catalan style dates back to the XIV century; however, over time, a number of structural changes and updates have been made to the building.

The current-day facade is the result of a renovation project by the architect Gaetano Cima, done in Neoclassic style in the XIX century. The front features tall, smooth semi-columns with Corinthian capitals supporting the gable and enclosing the large door topped by a large semi-circular window; the square-plan bell tower from the Gothic-Catalan period stands to the left, completed in 1442 as indicated in the commemorative plaque at the bottom.

The inside houses a single nave off of which are five chapels each side, rib cross vaulted, and the raised presbytery covered by a starry-cross vault.

The chapel at the bottom of the bell tower is home to the sculptural assembly of the Mourned, dating back to the XV century and produced in painted terracotta; the contemporary wooden assembly of the Crucifix and the Pie Donne can be found on the polychrome marble altar, while the marble high altar from the XVIII century can be attributed to Giovanni Battista Franco.
