Sitting above the Capo Ferro promontory, the Lighthouse of the same name dominates the entire area.
Construction of the lighthouse began in 1858 and the work was completed in 1861. It is a rectangular, two-storey building , topped by thetruncated cone tower housing the lantern. Nowadays, the two floors in the building are home to the families of the two lighthouse keepers who still operate the lighthouse.
The light was electrified in 1938. With its intermittent red light reaching as far as 8 nautical miles, it is a landing light complete with radio beacon.
The Capo Ferro area features a large number of coves, small islands and shallows. These make it one of the most difficult stretch of coastline to navigate, so much so that the seabeds of the Emerald Coastline are dotted with wrecks of boats which have sunk down through history.
This is why, over the years the decision was taken to position two lights, one in the north-eastern tip and one near the Island of Bisce, in order to guide boats through the channel between the coast and small island.
